Although we enter a new era of human-machine collaboration, people continue to have a determining role by searching for and creating deep meanings. Any creation derives from emotions, but machines do not experience them. This raises the question of authorship and responsibility for products created with the help of AI, for example. At the 11th St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum, VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov expressed his views about the future of technologisation in business and culture.
“Business technologisation requires, among other things, that culture in the broad sense of the term should be deeply involved in the process. We must openly bring up and discuss the most pressing questions: Is humanity at risk of losing individuality and replacing creative activity with algorithms? How can we determine the authorship of a cultural product and the values that it conveys? What responsibility do technology developers and content creators bear to society?” Igor Shuvalov said.
Business transformation driven by technological innovation raises a number of ethical and legal issues. According to VEB.RF’s Chairman, dealing with these issues will also determine the future development of the country’s entire business landscape to a large extent. He said: “We perfectly understand that the legal regulation of modern technology and artificial intelligence does not meet the growing needs of society. We will be working with Skoltech, Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, and universities, including Moscow State University, to develop this legal position. On the one hand, support for authors should be a matter of good manners, but on the other hand this requires a regulatory framework.”
The unique cultural code that is currently impacted by modern technology is an integral part of the formula for success in achieving Russia’s technological leadership.
“Technological leadership is not possible without something that unites us. We are united by love for our homeland, patriotism. Today we talked about emotions and feelings. These feelings should unite us around the cultural code—around everything that builds the foundations for us. We must develop these cultural foundations and pass them on to future generations. Through educational programmes, including the opportunities offered by Prosveshcheniye and others,” Igor Shuvalov emphasised.
Organised by VEB.RF, the Cultural Technologies panel discussion took place at the Cameron Gallery of the Tsarskoe Selo State Museum and Heritage Site. The participants included famous cultural and business figures, such as conductor Yuri Bashmet, opera director Hans-Joachim Frey, producers Artyom Mikhalkov and Pavel Peregudov, entrepreneur Alexander Shcheryakov, and musician Artyom Zatsepin.
During the discussion, the experts agreed that in the age of digitalisation, it is critical to keep a balance between technological innovation and cultural identity. They also concluded that Russia needed to find its own path for technological development in the cultural sphere while preserving its national values and traditions.
Scheduled to take place from 11 to 13 September, the 11th St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum is comprised of 11 panels and round-table discussions, including a new event, namely Art Education. Overall, the forum is to bring together more than 400 speakers from Russia and foreign countries.
