First Tram Media Socio-cultural Project Launched in Nizhny Novgorod

The project is personal stories and memories of city dwellers about trams. The core of the project is three thematic publications about the main tram routes connecting districts outside Nizhny Novgorod’s historic centre. In anticipation of the publications, the city will host a Tram Ride Marathon on 20 and 21 September.

The project was initiated by VEB.RF, working together with the Nizhny Novgorod Region Government to finance the modernisation of the city’s trams and related infrastructure. The project is carried out by a creative team formed primarily by Tikhaya Studio, one of Nizhny Novgorod’s key cultural institutions.

“It is important for VEB.RF to link regional economic growth with cultural and social content. First Tram Media is a socio-cultural project that is a rare example of synergy delivered by the private and public sectors creating the necessary conditions while creative industries and local residents fill them with vibrant content. The Nizhny Novgorod tram is not only a means of transport, but also a cultural icon of the city, and we are pleased that the infrastructure is upgraded as part of a larger story that unites people,” emphasised Oleg Rakitov, Director and Head of Socio-cultural Programmes, VEB.RF.

“It is crucial for us to work not only with the historic centre, but also with the entire city. Nizhny Novgorod is a vast and multifaceted place, and each part—whether Avtozavod, Sormovo, or the Prioksky District—has its own history and culture. The First Tram Media project helps to involve residents in cultural processes, showing the value of personal memories and experiences that cannot be found in textbooks. These living stories are used by creative industries, which now demonstrate their strength and ability to create new meanings for the entire city,” said Oleg Berkovich, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

For the First Tram Media project, Tikhaya Studio formed a vibrant team from Nizhny Novgorod’s creative industries—urban researchers, journalists, guides, designers, artists, and photographers—each developing their own approach.

Initiated and supported by VEB.RF, the Nizhny Novgorod Region Government, and Centre 800, the project is carried out by Tikhaya Studio in collaboration with Ecological Projects.
