A strategy session held to discuss the process of formulating the master plan for Kursk has selected the high-priority projects that will be carried out in the historic centre of the region’s administrative centre. The document is being developed by VEB.RF and Strelka KB, with an emphasis on preserving the city’s historic heritage ahead of the city’s 1,000th anniversary celebrations.

When famous landmarks are brought back to life, such as Kursk Fortress, Gladkova Hospital, the Anatoly Ufimtsev House with its wind power generator, or the Pavlov Street water towers, with their authenticity preserved and their functions adapted for use by present-day people, this an investment in the region’s cultural capital, appeal as a tourist destination, spiritual values. I am confident that our partnership with VEB.RF will become a key factor driving the transformation of Kursk’s historic centre.”

In collaboration with regional and municipal experts, we have already chosen the key areas of developing the city’s infrastructure. They encompass urban electric transport (with support from VEB.RF, work is well under way on renewing the city’s tramlines), utility networks, technology, creative industries, and construction. The VEB.RF Group intends to use all available instruments of support to implement the projects included in the master plan, especially public-private partnerships.”
The high-priority projects involve creating a cluster of historic, cultural, spiritual and educational assets at Kursk Fortress. The phased restoration of the monuments, with their functions adapted for use by present-day people, is already part of the master plan. On its 1,000th anniversary in 2032, the city will have new museums, including branches of federal museum institutions, as well as restaurants and public spaces.
During the strategy session, the experts also selected several projects to restore cultural heritage sites as high priorities for historic Kursk: creating a hotel in the historic building of Gladkova Hospital in Perekalsky Street; developing the Anatoly Ufimtsev and Fyodor Semyonov House Museum, including restoration work on the wind power generator; restoring the water towers built in the late 19th century or in the early 20th century in Pavlov Street.
Additionally, approval was given to improving key public spaces in the city centre (Tuskar Embankment, Red Square, First of May Park, Gorky Street) and laying out parks along the Seym valley for family leisure activities and environmental awareness.
The experts also suggested considering projects to set up a spiritual pilgrimage centre in the building of the former candle factory (Tuskarnaya Street, 1) and improve the site of the former Maltsev wine cellar (near the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel).
The strategy session took place in the historic building of Kursk State University (formerly, the Mariinsky Girls’ Gymnasium).
