VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov Visits Tatarstan’s Mendeleyevsk District and Ammoni Chemical Plant

Igor Shuvalov is on a business visit today to the Mendeleyevsk District in the Republic of Tatarstan. VEB.RF’s Chairman was given a tour of Mendeleyevsk community facilities created with support from the Ammoni chemical plant and was shown the manufacturing process of the company.

Ammoni is one of the largest nitrogen fertiliser producers in Europe. A member of Azot Group since 2020, the company makes more than 1 million tonnes of fertilisers per year, including ammonia, carbamide, nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, UAN and methanol.

“Work is well under way on adopting advanced energy conservation technology. For example, the construction of Ammoni facilities using the resources of the Novomendeleevsky chemical plant included redesigning the existing wastewater disposal system to switch over to closed-loop water recycling. This allowed us to reuse 3.5 million cubic metres of wastewater treated in-house, or more than 40 per cent of our total water consumption,” Ammoni’s General Director Dmitry Makarov told VEB.RF’s Chairman.

The chemical producer’s energy resources are also conserved by using a gas turbine unit. The combined heat and power (CHP) process raises efficiency to 70 per cent, which can be reached only by large and modern cogeneration stations.

Igor Shuvalov was also shown the company’s new product lines. Over the past three years, Ammoni has started the production of the AdBlue reagent, liquid carbon dioxide and UAN 32 in addition to creating an AI-based digital platform designed to measure agricultural field quality and forecast crop production.

“A new product line is more than just what is achieved by some company or other. Each completed project based in Russia is a contribution to promoting import substitution and reinforcing the country’s industrial potential. Projects such as Ammoni allow us to have every confidence that Russia is successfully progressing towards technological leadership and sustained economic growth,” said Igor Shuvalov.

In 2022 Ammoni embarked on a development programme for the Mendeleyevsk District (#химияродногогорода). The programme includes measures to promote three economic clusters: tourism; comfortable urban environment; education. A central part of the education cluster is the Mendeleev’s Legacy Lyceum of Chemistry and Technology, which was renovated and provided with new equipment and laboratories.

Due to event tourism, coupled with growth in other sectors, tourist flow increased from 15,000 visitors per year to 60,000. Over the past three years, Ammoni has invested more than 1 billion roubles overall in developing Mendeleyevsk.
