Igor Shuvalov: Alabuga Polytech Is Qualitatively New Occupational Education in Russia

Beginning in 2019, the Alabuga special economic zone carries out secondary occupational education programmes using a dual system and designed to provide the talent required by Alabuga corporate residents. During the business visit to Tatarstan, VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov was invited to see Russia’s unique centre focused on preparing students for highly skilled employment.

“The Alabuga special economic zone has an important role in projects implemented to secure Russia’s technological sovereignty. This is not only examples of how innovative solutions are successfully integrated into the manufacturing process, but also real success in creating new high-tech jobs. This is qualitatively new secondary occupational education, unparalleled in Russia, that turns recent school graduates into competitive, highly skilled workers,” said VEB.RF’s Chairman.

Igor Shuvalov appreciated the occupational training centre’s resources and expertise to provide the job market with talent meeting the requirements of modern industry. Alabuga Polytech currently has more than 5,000 students from 84 Russian regions. In the morning, they are taught how to operate modern equipment under the mentorship of superior engineers from Alabuga industrial residents; in the afternoon, students attend specialised secondary education institutions online. At the same time as studying, they receive traineeships at companies and eventually emerge as highly skilled, highly employable graduates with work experience.

The educational process at Alabuga Polytech is organised into 19 academic tracks that are highly desirable among Alabuga residents, such as building information modelling (BIM), business informatics (BI), industrial automation, industrial robotics, and microelectronics.

Additionally, Igor Shuvalov was shown several Alabuga-based high-technology production facilities contributing towards Russia’s technological leadership. As previously stated by VEB.RF’s Chairman, VEB.RF is in the process of redesigning the system of its support for such projects. According to him, priority will be given not only to projects that are highly sought after at home, but also to projects with high export potential.
