VEB.RF to Finance Construction of Buryatia’s National Museum and Baikal Theatre

VEB.RF will provide funding for the construction of the National Museum of Buryatia and the Baikal Theatre and Cultural Centre in Ulan-Ude. Concession agreements were signed with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Buryatia in the autumn of 2023.

These key projects of the Ulan-Ude master plan are implemented on the preferential terms of an advanced development zone. The projects have also been recognised as high priorities by the Presidium of the Government Commission on the Socioeconomic Development of the Far East.

The National Museum is designed to preserve the cultural heritage of Buryatia, and its collection will be accessible to a wide audience. The modern and spacious museum will unite three existing museums, update the collection, with than 3,500 exhibits on display in the same area, and provide work for 73 cultural figures. The total area of the museum will be 15,900 square metres. The estimated construction cost of the museum is 3.69 billion roubles, with 1.9 billion roubles to be provided by VEB.RF.

The National Museum will include a storage facility, a photo lab, restoration workshops, an exhibition space, a gallery, and a children’s centre with a summer terrace.

The new Baikal Theatre and Cultural Centre will also help to preserve the cultural heritage of Buryatia and create the conditions for creative leisure and artistic self-education. The total area of the centre will be 20,300 square metres. The centre will house a troupe of the Baikal national song and dance theatre, which currently does not have its own building. The project will make it possible to stage twice as many performances, or up to 250 per year, and to receive four times as many visitors.

The estimated construction cost of the theatre is 4.56 billion roubles, with 2.8 billion roubles to be provided by VEB.RF.

After the new building is put into operation, the Baikal Theatre is to house a dance school, an arts school, a music school, clubs for children, young people and pensioners, as well as organising socially significant events at a sophisticated level.
