Ulan-Ude Airport’s New Domestic Terminal Opened with Support from VEB.RF

A new passenger terminal of Baikal International Airport has been presented during a teleconference to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

The new, two-storeyed terminal of existing Baikal Airport was built to allow the airport to handle more domestic flights. Having a total area of 6,600 square metres and equipped with two jet bridges, the terminal can serve 400 passengers per hour at peak periods. The building is architecturally styled to look like a traditional Buddhist pagoda.

The project budget totals 3.65 billion roubles. VTB’s commitment is 2.68 billion roubles, including 1.34 billion roubles provided by VEB.RF on concessional terms through the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic.

VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov: “The new terminal of Ulan-Ude Airport will provide a modern level of passenger comfort, will make Buryatia more attractive to tourists, and will make this unique location more easily accessible.

“VEB.RF has proved its reputation as a reliable financial partner for regional development. We successfully work with industry investors in the Far East. High-quality airport infrastructure is being created here, which improves transport links between cities and encourages business activity. Four airport terminals have been built in the Far East and the Arctic with our support, and financing is under way for another four projects.”

In total, 12 airport terminals have been created with the involvement of VEB.RF, and eight regional projects are in progress. Investments in these projects total 367.4 billion roubles, with the VEB.RF Group’s commitment of 146.6 billion roubles.

Baikal Airport is located within the municipality of Ulan-Ude, 15 kilometres west of the city centre, 75 kilometres south-east of Lake Baikal. The airport served 715,605 passengers in 2023 (+13.8 per cent compared with 2022). Currently, the airport handles flights to 12 domestic destinations. The airport is expected to serve 751,000 passengers and 5,154 aircraft by the end of 2024. The airport is active in implementing its cargo transport programme, with more than 10,000 tonnes of cargo handled in the first ten months of 2024.
