The Russian-Indian conference ‘Sustainability Concept’ was held in Shimla, India, on 14-15 June 2024. The conference was organised by VEB Institute in partnership with the Russian side of the St Petersburg Dialogue Forum.
The focus of attention was on the Russian-Indian cooperation as part of implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference aroused great interest in expert and business circles. Specifically, VEB.RF Chief Economist and Head of the Russian delegation Andrey Klepach was received by the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh.
The parties discussed the approaches applied by Russia and India in achieving the SDGs. The discussion involved VEB.RF Chief Economist Andrey Klepach and the Ambassador and former Representative of India to the EU and UN Manjeev Singh Puri. According to Andrey Klepach, the EU and US suggest concentrating on environmental considerations of the SDGs, while the developing countries should focus on environmental and socio-economic issues such as improving the quality of education and medical assistance, infrastructure development, access to safe drinking water, forest management and biodiversity conservation.
The central topics for discussion included two sustainability areas recognised as priorities both by Russia and India: developing urban environment and improving the efficiency of water resources.
VEB.RF shared its experience of implementing urban development projects in Russia totalling about RUB2trn and covering more than 90 Russian cities. VEB.RF’s priorities include promotion of electric vehicles, systems of municipal solid waste management, water and sanitation systems, and urban infrastructure.
Professor Kumar Teotia highlighted the issues of cooperation among Indian and Russian cities in implementing the smart city concept. The participants also studied the experience of Russian companies and their Indian joint ventures in creating the system for air quality management as part of the smart city concept.
The second part of the conference was devoted to improving the efficiency of water resources, including the creation of smart ports and construction of river vessels, as well as development of navigation systems and river tourism.
The conference considered the experience of applying modern technical solutions to mitigate the consequences of weather extremes, such as floods, and approaches to monitoring water pollution.
The participants were presented with an analytical bulletin ‘Water Resources: Problems and Solutions’ prepared by VEB Institute together with Promsviazbank.
The conference participants took part in an interactive survey on the prospects of developing a taxonomy of blue projects in Russia and India. The majority of survey participants agreed that such taxonomy should cover all projects related to sustainable use of marine and freshwater resources. The taxonomy’s priorities include wastewater treatment and disposal, restoring rivers and coastal areas, water transport.
