VEB.RF has allocated RUB1.04bn to modernise the Yaroslavl tram system. The proceeds will be used to purchase 26 one-section trams scheduled to be delivered by December 2024.
Yaroslavl needs to fully replace the tram lines, the grid, the depot and the tram fleet. The modernisation includes building 45.3 km of single-track tram lines, new tracking substations and a depot. In total, the city will purchase 47 one-section trams manufactured by Ust-Katav Car Building Plant.
The first tram specially designed for Yaroslavl was delivered in December 2023 and is used for training local specialists. This low-floor tram is equipped with a HVAC system, media panels, validators for non-cash payments and USB-ports to charge phones. It is also equipped to secure embarkation and disembarkation of passengers with limited mobility. The second batch of trams will be delivered in May-June 2024.
Yaroslavl is one of the country’s ten cities eligible for modernisation of urban electric vehicles with VEB.RF’s support as approved by the Russian Government. The programme is supervised by Deputy Prime Minister and Chief of Staff of the Government Executive Office Dmitry Grigorenko. As instructed by the Russian Government, VEB.RF is also the programme’s project office.
The total project value is RUB19.7bn, with VEB.RF’s commitment being RUB12.7bn including the NWF’s funds.
The comprehensive modernisation of all the tram infrastructure will enable the local residents and tourists to travel quickly and safely.
“VEB.RF is a reliable strategic partner of the Yaroslavl Region. With VEB.RF’s support, the region implements tourism, industrial and infrastructural projects. One of our priorities is a comprehensive renewal of the tram system under a concession agreement,” said the Governor of the Yaroslavl Region Mikhail Evraev. “The comprehensive programme is designed to renew the tram fleet and infrastructure, modernise the grid, introduce digital services, and, in general, significantly improve the quality of public transport services.”
In December 2022, the Government of the Yaroslavl Region and Movista Regions Yaroslavl signed a 20-year concession agreement to modernise urban electric transport. All facilities under the concession agreement will be put into operation in 2025.
The tramways are already being renewed in the Dzerzhinsk District of Yaroslavl in Bliukher Street, from its intersection with Leningradsky Avenue to Elena Kolesova Street. Assembling of tram track rails for this section will start in the near future. In total, the first section running from Leningradsky Avenue towards the traffic circle in Bliukher Street will get 5.5 km of new tram tracks. Plans for the current year include the renewal of 20 km of tram tracks and reconstruction of two tram viaducts.
Apart from the renewal of tram fleet and infrastructure, the programme is aimed at enhancing safety, reducing road traffic accidents and travel time, increasing accessibility and comfort of public transport, encouraging environmental improvement, decreasing the average age of trams, and creating new jobs.
