VEB.RF earned more than 164 billion rubles for future pensioners, the return rate exceeds inflation

The state management company (SMC) VEB.RF has published the results of the placement of savings of citizens - clients of the Social Fund of Russia in 2023. Income from the expanded portfolio exceeded 161 billion rubles, the yield was 7.61% per annum, income from the government securities portfolio reached 3.2 billion rubles, the yield was 7.52% per annum.

“At the end of 2023, the key task of VEB as the state manager of the savings of SFR clients was completed - the profitability from the placement of funds for future pensions exceeded inflation for the period (according to Rosstat, inflation in Russia for 2023 was 7.42%). This result, against the backdrop of a rapid increase in the key rate, is ensured by coupon and interest income, primarily on “protective” instruments with floating income and money market instruments. As a result, the growth of pension portfolios turned out to be noticeably higher than the reference indices of the Moscow Exchange,” said Alexander Popov, head of the pension savings management unit of VEB.RF. As he noted, the accumulated return on SMC’s portfolios exceeds accumulated long-term inflation indices - 5, 10 and 15 years.

During 2023, VEB, as the state manager of savings, continued to increase investments in bonds - both in government securities and bonds of companies in the real sector. “Such investments make it possible to implement projects in the most important areas for improving the quality of life of people: gasification of the country and the development of urban infrastructure, road construction and transport renewal, renewable energy and digitalization of services to the population,” noted Alexander Popov.

VEB.RF works with the largest portfolio of savings on the market with a total volume of more than 2.3 trillion rubles, these are the funds of about 37 million clients of the Social Fund of Russia. Unlike private funds and managers, a state management company cannot invest in high-risk assets (such as shares); funds are invested in government and corporate bonds, placed in deposits and in accounts in the largest Russian banks.
