On Holding Business Forum Brazil-Russia: Strengthening of Strategic Partnership

In the course of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s formal visit to Russia a Business Forum Brazil-Russia: Strengthening of Strategic Partnership was held in Moscow. The Forum was organized by the Brazilian Embassy in Moscow, Vnesheconombank and the Russia-Brazil Council of Entrepreneurs.

In his welcoming address to the Forum’s participants the Brazilian President said that the Forum was designed to promote and strengthen ties between our business circles. The President called on Russian and Brazilian entrepreneurs to translate politicians’ words into reality. “You can do a lot to boost our contacts to bring the trade turnover between our countries to 10 billion dollars per year in the near future… We must take a new qualitative step and identify new fields of partnership. They might include power engineering, infrastructure and space exploration”, said Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In attendance of the Forum were Assistant to the Russian President Arkady Dvorkovich, Brazil’s Vice Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade Ivan Romalio, Chairman of the Russia-Brazil Council of Entrepreneurs, Management Board Member, Vnesheconombank Deputy Chairman Sergei Vasiliev.

Speaking before the Forum’s participants Sergei Vasiliev expressed confidence that “the bilateral Russian-Brazilian Business-Forum would become a place for discussing issues of boosting trade-economic, scientific and technological cooperation between our countries as well as an instrument for stepping up Russian and Brazilian business communities’ role in this process”.

The Forum’s participants discussed opportunities for establishing partnership in agribusiness including prospects for supplying machinery products for agricultural and other sectors to the Brazilian market. They also discussed Brazilian business experience in producing biofuels, Russia’s research in producing, developing, storing and transporting natural gas and prospects for cooperation in power engineering. The parties placed particular emphasis on the issue of making mutual payments in national currencies, banking cooperation as well as prospects for Russian-Brazilian cooperation in tourism.

The delegation of Brazilian entrepreneurs participating in the Forum included representatives of the following sectors: agribusiness, infrastructure, defense and aerospace industries, power engineering, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, information technologies, machine and equipment building industries, shipbuilding, textile and pulp-and-paper industries, banking and tourist services sectors.
