First Special ART SITIM Workshop for Mentally Impaired People Opens in Yakutsk

A special creative workshop for disabled people opens its doors in Yakutsk. This became possible due to a SIB project designed to create in the Far East a living system for mentally impaired people as an alternative to neuropsychiatric establishments. This model is currently an only alternative to neuropsychiatric hospitals.

The workshop will include several activities: sewing business, pottery and the production of fruit leather using berries and fruit. The sewing shop is equipped with all the necessary equipment and consumables. The pottery is equipped with a Russian-made muffle furnace. The fruit leather production shop has special equipment for the production of sweets. The working day will be four hours, with activities mentored by experienced craftsmen. The workshop will employ 16 mentally impaired people. Over the SIB implementation, an assisted living care home currently welcoming 12 mentally impaired young people was opened in Yakutsk. Another 25 disabled people living in families visit the care home to participate in the events and prepare to live independently.

Though the project will be completed only in 2024, its preliminary outcomes suggest the achievement of all projected social effects. It should be noted that the workshop was not initially envisaged by the project plan; its creation became possible due to efficient project management.

This SIB project in the social sector was originated by the Ministry of Labour and Social Development of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia); the project operator and initiator is VEB.RF. The service provider is GAOORDI, a Saint Petersburg–based association of disabled children’s parents, in cooperation with SITIM. The project launched on 1 April 2021 will be completed on 31 March 2024.
