On the Fifth Anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Interbank Consortium

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Interbank Consortium marks its fifth anniversary.

The Agreement on the interbank cooperation (consortium) within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that marked the creation of interbank consortium was signed by financial institutions authorized by SCO member countries’ governments in October of 2005 in Moscow.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Interbank Consortium incorporated the Kazakhstan Development Bank, The China State Development Bank (China’s Development Bank), Vnesheconombank, the Tajikistan National Bank, the Uzbekistan National Bank, the Kyrgyzstan Settlement and Savings Company.

In 2006, Shanghai Cooperation Organization Interbank Consortium member banks approved an Action Program in support of regional economic cooperation. The Program specified guidelines and the joint action plan at the initial stage of the Interbank Consortium’s activity.

Over this period of time the Consortium’s members established the organization’s regulatory and legal framework and identified the mechanism for consultations, coordination and exchange of information as well as formed a unified project basis.

By way of providing credit lines and project financing Consortium member banks finance large-scale projects on the territory of SOC member countries in the amount of several tens of billions of dollars. These projects’ joint implementation is aimed at expanding trade and economic cooperation and is in line with top-priority lines of investment activity determined by joint decisions made by SOC member countries’ governments.

In the coming period Interbank Consortium member banks are determined to take steps to improve their work on the key lines of their activity to maximize the organization’s efficiency as a financial investment mechanism designed to sustain economic growth and innovative activity within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
