VEB at INNOPROM 2018: Our mission is to design competitive import-substituting products
Vnesheconombank has taken part in the ninth international industrial exhibition, INNOPROM-2018. Major topics discussed at the forum included digitalisation, its integration in real industrial processes, and the role of development institutions in supporting industrial businesses.
According to Andrei Klepach, Deputy Chairman at Vnesheconombank (Chief Economist) and Member of the Management Board, “both the government, and businesses underline and highlight the significance of digitalisation. This area is being addressed not only as part of the relevant national project. The digital economy is just one of our focus areas or projects. In parallel, we are working on a digital industry or industry digitalisation programme.
Ilya Brillyantov, Vice President at VEB, has taken part in the discussion on the government support for projects aimed at building and expanding engineering centres at universities, their development outlooks, and assistance in diversifying operations and adopting digital solutions at the defence industry’s companies. In his speech to the participants, he noted that engineering centres focusing on projects in computer sciences, energy, transportation, process automation, diagnostic and surgery equipment, and telecommunications technologies, including 5G and the Internet of Things, are already shaping the future of high-tech solutions that will be further delivered to industrial businesses of the defence industry to set up and expand the manufacturing of products for civilian usage. As a result, industrial companies operating in various market niches of the defence industry will be able to launch new cutting-edge commercial products in the market, which will exceed RUB3.4tn by 2020. Therefore, university engineering centres can make a significant contribution to the achievement of the national goal of diversifying operations at industrial businesses.
Andrey Datchenko, Senior Manager and Director of the Expert Analytics Directorate, also took part in the business programme of the exhibition. In his speech at the panel discussion, From Strategy to Execution: A Roadmap for Industrial Waste Processing, he noted: “The industrial waste processing projects presented to us show a potential for investing close to RUB600bn until 2020. The most exciting projects are related to thermal treatment. The cost of projects to be launched in this area in the coming years will total RUB250bn. The economics of such projects is not very sensitive to the cost of waste cost as in 70% of these projects payback is achieved through the electricity market.”
Currently, VEB is exploring opportunities for participating in waste-to-energy power plant construction projects. Experts estimate that once completed, these projects will help efficiently neutralise up to 30% of waste in the Moscow Area while reducing to zero waste dumping in Kazan, in the resort clusters of the Krasnodar Territory and the Caucasian Mineral Waters. For the Russian power industry, this niche is a new fast-growing sector, which, among other things, will require support from development institutions.
At INNOPROM-2018, VEB-Innovations, a subsidiary of Vnesheconombank, and Promobot (a Russian manufacturer of service robots) signed an agreement of intent, under which VEB-Innovations agrees to invest in Promobot RUB450m. Promobot is planning to use the proceeds to upgrade its product lineup, develop production, and scale up its business.
