Vnesheconombank and MGIMO launch a joint research and education programme, Russia–China: A Course for Integration

A memorandum on cooperation between Vnesheconombank and MGIMO University was signed at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on 24 May. The joint Programme between Vnesheconombank and MGIMO includes a series of conferences, lectures, and master classes by top managers of VEB and representatives of our Chinese partners, joint research projects by VEB and MGIMO, as well as internships by MGIMO students at VEB.


The memorandum has been signed by Daniil Algulyan, Senior Vice President and Head of International Business, Exports, and Financial Institutions at Vnesheconombank, , and Anatoliy Torkunov, Rector of the MGIMO University of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"China is a key region for VEB. We have already accumulated a vast experience of successful projects involving Chinese partners, and we see tremendous opportunities for further development in this area. The joint Programme between Vnesheconombank and MGIMO will help pass the accumulated experience on to undergraduate and postgraduate students and set up a platform for multilateral interaction for all parties interested in promoting Russian-Chinese relations," said Daniil Algulyan.

"MGIMO and VEB are long-standing partners. Our cooperation covers a wide range of areas from digital economy and advanced financial instruments to training of specialists to help VEB expand to new markets," noted Anatoliy Torkunov, Rector of MGIMO.

The key topics of the Programme will include the discussion of international experience of development institutions and integration between the One Belt, One Road initiative and the Eurasian Integration project. The programme's events will involve employees of development institutions from Russia, China, and other countries, representatives of ministries, international experts, and representatives of the business community.

State Corporation "Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs (Vnesheconombank)" is the national bank for development, one of the largest Russian financial institutions. Founded in 1924, the Bank has been operating since 2007 under a special federal law on the Bank for Development. The Supervisory Board led by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, is the supreme governance body of the Bank. Under the Development Strategy until 2021, VEB will focus its operations on financing high value-added industrial projects, developing infrastructure, supporting non-commodity exports, and promoting innovations and projects within the National Technology Initiative.

MGIMO University of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a leading higher education institution in Russia. The university ranks first in the QS Stars Employability Rating for employment of students within one year after graduation. It was the first university in Russia, and Central and Eastern Europe to have been rated five QS Stars. Listed in the Guinness World Records as an academic institution teaching the greatest number of national foreign languages (53 languages). Since 2017, MGIMO is licensed to award degrees of Candidate of Sciences and Doctor of Sciences. MGIMO has a wide network of foreign partners counting more than 150 universities and research institutes from over 50 world countries. The university's structure currently includes two campuses, seven departments, three institutes, a college, and a Business School.
