The Russian Investment Forum saw the signing of the agreement to create a 50-qubit quantum computer in Russia.
On 15 February 2018, during the Russian Investment Forum, Vnesheconombank, VEB Innovations, the Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects, Lomonosov Moscow State University and Digital Economy signed the agreement to carry out the development project to create in Russia a multi-qubit (at least 50-qubit) optical quantum simulator based on photonic integrated circuits and neutral atoms. The cooperation agreement will focus on providing resources for project implementation, coordinating the goals of research and assisting with the introduction of deliverables. In addition, the project will involve setting up the necessary research and technology infrastructure and holding consultations, working meetings and other events to set and accomplish application tasks in quantum technology.
The creation of a 50-qubit computer is currently believed to make it possible to gain quantum supremacy: this means that a computer like that will have the computing capacity that cannot be reached by the most advanced bit-based computers.
“By forming the consortium, we are setting an ambitious goal: to combine resources of Russia’s best researchers, development institutions, businesses and government agencies to attain large-scale objectives in quantum technology. It is noteworthy that the consortium will be based on the principle of being open to new participants such as research teams, business partners and other entities. We will involve the strongest teams and create the conditions for their communication. Only by combining our capabilities and efforts to accomplish application tasks in quantum technology, we will create the conditions for Russia becoming a leader in the ‘scramble for quantum technology,’” Vnesheconombank’s Chairman Sergey Gorkov said.
“Experiments involving quantum computers are conducted as early as today, but their computing power is still inferior to that of ordinary computers,” Andrey Grigoryev, General Director of the Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects, said. “To achieve qualitatively new, ground-breaking results, it is necessary to develop all of today’s technologies in the physical implementation of quantum computing. There are several research teams in Russia with great technological advances and practical experience in carrying out quantum technology projects. When their efforts are combined with the capabilities of development institutions and publicly financed funds, they will be able to obtain practical results in the near future.”
“To increase the number of competitive companies creating breakthrough technology-based products in Russia, it is necessary to create and constantly improve the conditions for the emergence and development of practical projects in promising research areas,” Kirill Bulatov, General Director of VEB Innovations, said. “Under the agreement, we will set up new scientific collaborations and create new formats of the interaction among Russian quantum-technology organisations.”
Quantum computers are considered today to have such applications as modelling new industrial materials and pharmacology: the emergence of powerful computers based on new physical principles will make it possible to create effective medications and materials with programmable properties due to the possibility of precisely calculating their molecular structure.
