VEB Management Board Member Svetlana Yachevskaya: legal advisors representing the state in international disputes should be selected via employment of a single provider

Vnesheconombank’s Deputy Chair - Member of the Management Board Svetlana Yachevskaya took part in the Kazan Legal 2017 international legal forum. As part of the Challenges in the Management of International Disputes session, she gave an overview of aspects of interaction between government agencies and legal advisors when representing and defending interests of the Russian Federation in international disputes.

Svetlana Yachevskaya believes it is fair that today legal advisors representing the state in international disputes are selected via employment of a single provider. Furthermore, it is correct to choose a responsible agency on a case-by-case basis, with such choice being unique for each particular field.

Svetlana also highlighted the idiosyncrasies of the legal advisor fee payment by the government as a most complex and contentious aspect. She noted that it would be right to introduce the success fee as a key practice. With this, fairer initial price for a service will be set and faster and more successful dispute resolution will be promoted.
