Blockchain technology will help conserve forests in the Novgorod Region

The first educational programme organized jointly by Quantorium, the children’s technopark, and Vnesheconombank’s Centre of Blockchain Competencies was launched in Veliky Novgorod. The young researchers will work on a project to create a distributed forest ledger. The project will serve as foundation for an automated system that will help conserve forests throughout Russia.

The initiative was started in the Novgorod Region thanks to the support of Vnesheconombank’s Centre of Blockchain Competencies and Russia’s top universities: New Materials and Technology Research University (NUST MISiS) and Higher School of Economics (HSE), as well as experts from the children’s technopark Quantorium to be officially open in Veliky Novgorod this October.

“What makes this programme special is its project-based approach and the high social significance of the problem the students are solving. The participants will be among the first interns at Vnesheconombank’s Department of Youth, announced by Chairman Sergey Gorkov during the Main Open Lesson held in Yaroslavl during the Russia’s Intellectual Leaders of the Future Forum,” says Vladimir Dyomin, Adviser to Vnesheconombank’s Chairman.

The project will be implemented in several stages, by a team of Quantorium students with the assistance of professional experts from Russia’s leading high-technology companies and the two universities (NUST MISiS and Higher School of Economics).

During the first stage, the participants will conduct aerial surveying with air drones, digitise the data gathered and set up a system of distributed ledgers for data storage. Then, they will take pictures of forests with the drone and save them to the distributed ledger. The blockchain algorithms that have been created will compare the digital data received from the drones and identify deforestation areas.

At the second stage, the participants will add new functions to the existing database system and embed flight path control mechanisms by improving the change detection system. One of the technical requirements for the new system is to develop an automatic algorithm detecting the nature and the causes of damage, for example, fire aftermath or deforestation. The blockchain technology used in the project secures the completeness and integrity of the data stored in the ledger and prevents any change of this data.

As a reminder, this October, Vnesheconombank and NUST MISiS are opening a Centre of Blockchain Competencies designed to become an R&D centre for distributed ledgers (blockchain) and a centre of regulatory and legal support, training, and technology commercialization and popularization.

Vnesheconombank (VEB), officially called State Corporation “Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs (Vnesheconombank)” is a national development bank and one of Russia’s largest financial institutions. Established in 1924, Vnesheconombank has been operating in compliance with the Special Federal Law On the Bank for Development since 2007. The Bank’s supreme governing body is the Supervisory Board headed by Chairman of the Russian Government Dmitry Medvedev. According to the VEB Strategy 2021, its priority financing areas include high value added manufacturing, infrastructure, non-commodity exports, conversion of defence industries to civilian production, innovation and Russia’s National Technological Initiative (NTI) programme projects.
