As part of Digital Economy Programme, VEB investing in blockchain, quantum and convergent technologies

The VEB Group joins the Digital Economy Programme and is investing in strategic areas such as blockchain, quantum and convergent technologies. As part of the programme, VEB Innovations intends to establish a number of investment funds (an ‘umbrella’ of funds), leveraged, in particular, from foreign sources. Investors are to include both Russian companies and global industrial leaders.

The VEB Strategy 2021 provides for support to high-technology projects as one of the Group’s key business lines. The Strategy prioritizes a number of business lines complying with cross-cutting digital technologies identified in the Digital Economy Programme, in particular: distributed ledger, or blockchain technologies; quantum technologies (quantum encryption, data transmission, quantum sensors); convergent technologies (neurotechnologies, artificial intelligence, cyber physical systems, robotics and sensorics).

Equipped with the necessary competencies, VEB is considering participation in third party venture funds as an investor. VEB and VEB Innovations will handle the financing for investing in projects, in particular, in those delivered in the areas mentioned.

“Alongside investments by venture funds with VEB’s participation, we also have other tools such as leasing, debt finance, and investment consulting. We are prepared to support projects from their early stages to setting up and scaling up production, to bringing products onto the Russian and foreign markets, as well as the flotation of companies,” indicated Kirill Bulatov, Director General of VEB Innovations.

The VEB Group in cooperation with its partners contemplates launching centres of competencies of international standard. VEB’s partners will include major research and development centres, higher educational establishments, and corporations. VEB Innovations will act as an aggregator and coordinator for all process participants. In terms of convergent technologies, VEB Innovations actively cooperates with the Kurchatovsky Research Institute. As for quantum technologies, there are plans to set up a consortium comprising leading specialized research institutions.

Overall, it will open up new opportunities from the perspective of both building a pipeline of projects in the target areas of the Digital Economy Programme, and generating demand for innovations and innovative companies.
