Innovation and high technologies were the highlights of the meeting of Vnesheconombank’s Expert Council

The National Research Centre (NRC) Kurchatov Institute hosted the first meeting of the reshaped Expert Council of Vnesheconombank entitled “High-tech Projects and National Technological Initiative”.

The event was participated by the Chairman of Vnesheconombank Sergey Gorkov, the President of the NRC Kurchatov Institute Mikhail Kovalchuk, representatives of public authorities, scientific and nonprofit organizations. The meeting was opened by Evgeny Yasin, Academic Adviser of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. In his speech, Mr. Yasin said that “high-tech and innovation is a strategic area, the development of which could compensate the fall in prices for hydrocarbons”.


In his comments on the agenda of the Expert Council’s meeting, Sergey Gorkov emphasized that “the theme of today’s meeting is mainly attributed to defining VEB’s position in the system of innovation support”. Vnesheconombank’s new Development Strategy provides for the central focus of the Bank on priority sectors of economy: infrastructure, high value-added industries, hi-tech projects and exports. “We should identify the high-tech industries that would transform the economy. All the investment that we can attract should be prioritized. It is important to define VEB’s position in the system of innovation support. The President entrusted us with the task”, he said. “Potentially, it could be post-venture financing”, assumed the Chairman of Vnesheconombank.

Ilya Strebulaev, Professor of Stanford University Graduate School of Business, was an invited guest to the Export Council’s meeting. His speech highlighted the success factors of Silicon Valley.

The speakers also included Sergey Kalyuzhny, Adviser to Chief Executive Officer – Chief Scientist of RUSNANO Management Company LLC, Vladimir Knyaginin, Vice-President of the Centre for Strategic Research, Andrey Ziuzin, Managing Director of VEB-Innovations Fund, and Evgeny Kuznetsov, Interim Director General of RVK OJSC.


The meeting also discussed a new industrial agenda, leading-edge industrial and nature-like technologies and the National Technological Initiative (NTI), as well as promising nanotechnologies markets. A particular emphasis was placed on the state of the Russian innovative system and Vnesheconombank’s role in its development based on the NTI support. According to Mikhail Kovalchuk, “embedding the development institution in the nanotech industry chain is key to the industry’s growth”.
